General Placement Test

Is this your first course at the FLC?

The placement test is mandatory in order to assess your French skills and recommend the course that best matches your level.

This placement test is intended only for students who wish to take courses at the French Language Centre (FLC) in the Faculty of Arts. If you want to take courses at the School of Continuing Studies or theÌýDépartement des littératures de langue française, de traduction et de créationÌý(DLTC),Ìýplease visit their respective websites.

Who needs to take the test?

  • Anyone registering for an FRSL course at the FLCÌýfor the first time.
  • Students who previously took a course at the FLCÌýbut then studied French elsewhere (outside ³ÉÈË´óƬ or in another department).
  • Exchange students or those with a special status from another institution.

Ìý

What do I need to take the test?

  • Your ³ÉÈË´óƬ student number (9 digits)
  • Your ³ÉÈË´óƬ ID (firstname.lastname [at] mail.mcgill.ca)

Ìý

What are the test steps?

The placement test has three steps:

Step 1 – Written Test

  • Online test available at any time
  • Maximum duration: 90Ìýminutes (depending on your proficiency level)
  • Complete the test without any external help (e.g., online tools, AI, books, personal notes, etc.).

The result is valid for 2 years, provided you don’t take any French courses in the meantime.

Step 2 – Individual Oral Interview

  • Interview on Zoom, registration required
  • Duration: 5 to 10 minutes depending on your level (plan for up to an hour of waiting; first come, first served)
  • After completing Step 1, you will receive an email with a registration link for the interview session — check your spam/junk folder if needed.

Multiple interview dates are offered, but space is limited. If all sessions are full, you will need to wait for new dates to be announced

Already completed the written test (Step 1) but didn’t receive the interview link?

Step 3 – Registration

When can you register?Ìý

  • The wait time for course registration in Minerva is about 1 business day after your interview.
  • If the written test shows that you have no prior knowledge of French, you will be informed that the oral interview (Step 2) is not required. In this case, the wait time to register in Minerva is approximately 1 business day to 1 week after Step 1.

Note: A course recommendation does not guarantee a spot. Space is limited — register in Minerva as soon as possible.
